The Real Estate Marketing Internet Scandal
With so much talk about the future of real estate and the internet, it's almost impossible to get through a day without thinking about how this will affect you. Many will have you believe that the internet will replace real estate agents in the near future and the industry as you know it will disappear. But this isn't so. Let's take a look at why.
First of all you have to understand the internet for what it is. It is nothing more than a type of media. Just as newspapers, TV, radio, mail, etc. are ways to communicate a message to a prospective client, the internet is no different. It is a tool, nothing more. It is a very good tool by the way, but only if you know how to use it.
When you understand the difference between strategic marketing and tactical marketing, you are able to see the internet for what it is... a way of communicating. A tactic. The internet by itself is useless without applying the correct strategy to be able to use it. Those who have been able to get the most out of using the internet as a marketing tool are those that understand marketing. It's that understanding and being able to apply it that allows them to have success on the internet. Not the internet itself.
The real estate marketing strategies that work on the internet are the same general marketing strategies that have been used for over one hundred years, now applied to the internet. It's not the internet that makes them work, it's that they work everywhere and the internet is just one more way to use them.
The reason they work is the same reason you will never have to worry about the internet replacing your career. It's very simple. Just as the computer didn't eliminate paper, as was predicted (it actually created more paper use). The internet will never entirely eliminate people from a real estate transaction. There will always be a person that is buying or selling a house, not a computer. The decision to spend money will always be left to a real live human being, not a computer. You can't take people out of the equation.
So recognize the internet for what it is. A tool. If you think about it, the internet can really only deliver one thing, information, that's it. And that is what you can best use it for. It's not now, and never will be the cure all solution to all businesses.
